What gigs do I want in 2011?
When I started blogging in October 2007, I had no idea that the term “Social media” existed, and I certainly didn’t know what it meant. I also didn’t have any idea that in a few short years, brands would be valuing MY voice and MY opinion. My journey into the world of social media has been fun and exciting, but it has also been a lot of work…Time and effort that has not always been adequately compensated.
I have had the opportunity to work with many brands over the last few years, doing everything ranging from testing products and providing feedback to sponsored posts and reviews on my blog. While taking surveys or answering questions about products and services take the least amount of time, the most fulfilling gigs I’ve had have involved longer-term interaction between myself and the companies I’ve come in contact with. In those cases, I have felt like I’ve had the most impact on the future of the brand. I have also enjoyed writing posts about products for my blog, and make it a challenge to find something personal to write about within each review.
I love receiving positive feedback from brands about the stories and personal experiences I’ve included in my posts….and I always get the best responses from my readers when I include a personal touch. As we get ready to start a new year, I look forward to the gigs that I’ve already got in the works as well as those that will be coming along.
Just a few years ago, I was “just a mom” (something, by the way, that I have always taken great pride in). Now, I am a Mom with Influence. And I love it.
What kind of gigs are your favorites to do?

I am a single mom raising my grandson who is ADHD. How do I get into the blogging business?…I want to work from home so I can be with my grandson more. I thank you for any advise…….Jeanna Norwood
Bless you for being such a great grandma. I think what really helps when starting is a blog is figuring what topic you want to blog about and finding a community of like minded bloggers. It helps to read a bunch of the top bloggers first – try http://www.typeaparent.com to find some parenting related ones. A great place to start for resources is with @problogger. Here is a great article he did on tips and resources : http://www.problogger.net/archives/2009/01/30/starting-your-first-blog-29-tips-tutorials-and-resources-for-new-bloggers/. Local conferences are a great way to meet bloggers and get pointers on how to start too. Bloggybootcamps are held all over the country. Here is a link to their site: http://www.thesitsgirls.com/bloggy-boot-camp/. Best of luck and make sure to check our gigcoin gigs for opportunities at http://gigcoin.com/manager/giglist/. I’ll ask a few folks to weigh in on tips too. Thank you for stopping by. Julie
I love giving out ‘mom social media’ advice. Not ‘business’ advice but what works for me in the social media world. It’s always very interesting to listen to a brand’s goals for a project and then ask them why that’s their goal? Then follow up with ideas that make more sense in this space for what they are doing… often changing their goals around! I love that!
I had a few folks weigh in on tips for a new blogger on the GigCoin Facebook page. Feel free to come back to ask for help!
Thank you so much for the help!
